How are teammates matched and when do chats start?

How does HeyTaco decide who gets paired?

Taco Chats uses the Taco Graph, HeyTaco's map of team relationships, to make thoughtful matches instead of random ones. It looks at signals like who recognizes whom and who's already connected. People who've exchanged fewer tacos are more likely to be paired, because the goal is to build new connections, not repeat the ones you already have.

Each chat on the Admin → Taco Chats page shows a Match Type (for example, Connect) so you can see why a pair was matched.

When do chats start?

Chats open on the schedule set in Admin → Settings → Taco Chats:

  • Random days & times: chats are spread across Tuesday–Thursday, 10am–3pm in your team's local time.
  • Fixed day & time: every chat opens at the same day and time.

You can see every scheduled chat, with its date and time, in the Upcoming Chats table on the Admin → Taco Chats page. Hover over a date to see the exact time.

What does a Taco Chat look like in Slack?

HeyTaco sends both teammates a message that they've been paired up for a Taco Chat, along with an icebreaker question (things like a go-to coffee order, a hidden talent, or a favorite childhood snack). HeyTaco reads the replies so it can follow up naturally, and jumps back in with a new question if the chat goes quiet. Once the conversation is rolling, HeyTaco signs off.

Can I choose who gets paired with whom?

Not right now. Matches are made automatically by the Taco Graph. You control who's participating (see How do I add or remove people from Taco Chats?), how often matches happen, and when chats start.
