Getting Started with Quests
What is the Quests feature?
Quests let you reward your team with tacos for things beyond everyday peer recognition — finishing a book, volunteering, showing up to a team event, or anything else you want to encourage. You create a Quest, your team completes it, and tacos land in their account. No one has to notice first.
Quests are currently available for HeyTaco for Slack users only.
How Quests work
Every Quest works one of two ways:
- Self-submit — someone does the thing and submits it themselves (with proof, if you require it). Once approved, they get the tacos.
- Nominate — someone flags a teammate who did something worth rewarding. Once you approve it, the teammate gets the tacos. This is the one Quest type that still works like traditional recognition — a teammate has to notice first.
You choose which of these (or both) a Quest allows when you create it.
How to create your first Quest
Step 1: Navigate to Admin → Quests, and click Create Quest.

Step 2: Choose a starter template from the catalog, or start from scratch.

Step 3: Add a title, description, and (optionally) an image and submission instructions.

Step 4: Set the taco reward, choose self-submit, nominate, or both, and decide whether completions need your approval.

Step 5: Publish. Your team will see the Quest on the Quests page in the HeyTaco webapp.

For the full list of settings you can configure on a Quest — proof requirements, per-user and per-team limits, cooldowns, and visibility — see “How do I configure and manage Quest settings?”

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
| Question | Answer |
| Who can create a Quest? | Admins create and manage the Quest catalog for your team. Anyone with a HeyTaco account can complete a published Quest. |
| Is Quests available on my plan? | Yes — Quests are available on every HeyTaco plan. |
| Do people get tacos right away? | Only if the Quest doesn't require approval. If approval is turned on, tacos are awarded once an admin approves the submission. |
| Can I edit or turn off a Quest after it's published? | Yes — admins can edit, pause, or end any Quest at any time from Admin → Quests. |
| Can someone complete the same Quest more than once? | That depends on how the Quest is set up. Admins can set a per-user limit, a per-team limit, or leave it unlimited. See “How do I configure and manage Quest settings?” for details. |
| Where do people see available Quests? | In the HeyTaco web app, on Quests page. |
| Can I see who's completed a Quest? | If you've enabled public completions on that Quest, yes — a completion feed and mini leaderboard will show on the Quest's page. You can turn this off for any Quest you'd rather keep private. |
| What happens if I deny a submission? | The person is notified by DM, along with any note you add explaining why. They're welcome to submit again. |
| Is there a way for Quests to complete themselves automatically? | Not yet — every Quest today is admin-created and either self-submitted or nominated. Automatic, condition-based Quests (like earning tacos for a streak of taco-giving) are on our roadmap. |
