What is Taco Chats?
Taco Chats is a HeyTaco feature for Slack that helps your team actually get to know each other, from new hires to the people you work with but never really talk to. We match you with a teammate and start a chat, so you can say hi, swap a few stories, and connect without adding another meeting.
How does it work?
Your admin turns it on. We handle the rest. On a schedule your team picks, Taco Chats matches you with a teammate using the Taco Graph (HeyTaco's map of who recognizes whom) and more. We open a Slack chat with a fun question to get things going. No calendar invites. Chat whenever it works for you both.
How do you pick who I'm paired with?
We use Taco Graph, HeyTaco's map of team relationships, to make more thoughtful matches. It looks at signals like who recognizes whom, whoโs already connected, and where new connections could be useful โ so Taco Chats isn't just randomly pairing people.
Do I have to participate?
Nope. Your admin picks who to invite, and once you're invited you're in. You can opt out any time and you won't be matched again until you choose to come back.
How do I set it up for my team?
Once your team's spot opens up, we'll let you know, and you can turn on Taco Chats from your HeyTaco admin. Choose how often matches are made, and your team is automatically included. Anyone can opt out anytime. The first matches go out on your chosen schedule, and your 30-day trial starts then. Setup takes just a few minutes.
How much does Taco Chats cost?
Early-access teams get 30 days free, then $1 per participating teammate per month. Anyone who opts out isn't billed.
Does it work with Microsoft Teams?
Not yet. Taco Chats is launching in Slack first. If your team is on Microsoft Teams, get early access and we'll let you know as soon as it's available there.
Do I have to join a video call?
Nope. Taco Chats happens in Slack, where your team already works. If you and your match want to hop on a call or grab a real coffee, great โ but it's never required.
What happens when the trial ends?
Your trial automatically becomes a Taco Chats subscription at $1 per teammate per month, so your team's chats keep going without a break. You don't need to do anything. We'll send you a reminder before it converts, and you can cancel anytime before then from the account page.
Does HeyTaco read our conversations?
Only inside a Taco Chat. When two teammates are matched, HeyTaco opens a chat thread for them, and HeyTaco's AI reads that thread so it can start the conversation and keep it going with a follow-up when things get quiet. It never sees anything outside that thread, including your other channels, DMs, or the rest of your Slack.
Does HeyTaco store our Taco Chat messages?
No. HeyTaco's AI reads a Taco Chat thread in the moment so it can keep the conversation going, but HeyTaco never saves messages. They stay in Slack, under your workspace's normal retention settings, and are never used to train AI. Admins see participation stats, like how many chats happened, but never what people said. HeyTaco is SOC 2 compliant. Read our AI Use Policy for the full picture, or visit our Trust Center for details.
