Why Your Company Wellness Program is Stuck in 2016

Get your 10k steps in? Whether it’s a personal goal or company challenge, you should feel proud. But employee retention and a strong company culture hinge on a different kind of wellness.

TL;DR

  • Yesterday’s corporatized wellness program was about physical fitness and health spending.
  • Today’s is more about building a culture that naturally prevents burnout.
  • Team involvement is better when it creates community, not competition.
  • Manager behaviors have the biggest impact on how prevalent burnout is on a team.

Our definition of wellness at work has changed. So should the company wellness program.

Ah, a basket of citrus, ClassPass, and the two-liter water challenge. Do employees in 2026 have the energy or desire to appreciate these? Classic corporate wellness focused on reducing claims. (It didn’t really work.) Today’s teams are struggling to feel “finished” enough with their responsibilities to pursue personal wellness goals on their own time. Goals that may not include a discounted barre class.

We’re all aware that mental health is a focus in the modern employee wellness program. But resources like counseling and PTO are a solid benefit, part of compensation. Protecting people’s energy now and encouraging a more enriching employee experience is what sets a culture apart from the rest.

Wellness at work in 2026 includes:

  • Knowing what’s expected of you
  • Feeling you belong and are appreciated
  • Having boundaries respected
  • Support and clear communication from managers

Modern employee wellness program ideas for 2027

Physical, financial, and mental. What’s missing here? Community and job satisfaction. Both of those essential parts of employee wellness depend on people. The ones in charge, and the ones we work alongside.

Swap challenges for real culture-building.

It’s the third week of your company step challenge. Participation has dwindled to the team members who are already physically fit and were getting those steps anyway. They deserve recognition, but wellness initiatives should benefit everyone. They can even become little team rituals.

Daily pockets of micro-recovery that everyone participates in can feel like a good work culture that also supports well-being. Build a few of these into every day:

  • Short away-from-desk breaks every two hours
  • Meeting-free blocks
  • Logging off for lunch
  • Five-minute gratitude sessions
  • Brief pauses to transition between tasks
👁️ Try the 20-20-20 eye reset for remote teams. Help everyone reduce screen strain during deep work hours or stressful periods. Send prompts every 20 minutes to look 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Now that there’s no competition, unite the team.

What if you do want to do something special that focuses on wellness? Design it so everyone can encourage one another.

Say some people would like to take a 15-minute walk every day to unplug and get some fresh air. In our new Quests feature, admins can launch this quest and allow public comments. Participating peers can discuss where they went, what they listened to, and other updates. More group activity and social sharing, less competitive challenge.

And if the company marathon runner sort of misses winning the step challenge, they can always tell their coworkers about the race they just placed in. Quests lets your peers nominate you for special recognition, so their off-the-clock accomplishments still matter.

Don’t outsource wellness to another portal.

Earlier, we referenced company/manager support and communication as a factor in overall employee wellbeing. This applies to what resources we provide. Accessibility and clarity reduce mental load and disruption. Plus, it’s a practical way to increase participation.

Separate platforms create low login rates. Let wellness program-related content live where work does, in Slack, on calendars, and in how you run meetings.

✅ We know for a fact that this works. Almost two-thirds of people who use HeyTaco use it every single day. We’re not just saying this to brag. One of the reasons for those impressive rates is low friction. Whatever tool you choose to use, your people deserve at least that.

Make it preventative instead of remedial.

Burnout is the biggest threat to workplace happiness, not low muscle tone or mild dehydration. The primary causes of burnout are having no control, getting no recognition, feeling isolated, and being saddled with an unsustainable workload.

Leadership buy-in is crucial when updating your employee wellness program ideas. Are managers within your organization willing to model anti-burnout behaviors like these?

  • Eliminate ambiguity from expectations, priorities, and deadlines. “If you only do three things this week, here’s what they are.”
  • End meetings at :25 and :55. That provides a five-minute transition to the next block.
  • Remove bottlenecks. If 15 different things require their approval weekly, they can cut five.
  • Gains and drains checks. Checking in with “What helped you gain energy? What drained it?” can be all the insight and research leaders need.
  • Protect their personal time. Managers who not only take their PTO but also say, “I won’t be responding after 6 pm,” are discouraging burnout-making behaviors. Appearing work-obsessed and “always on” tells people who want to succeed that they have to do the same.

Company wellness program examples for healthy teams

Something that may have stood out to you is that many of these updated ideas don’t seem very wellness program-y. It shares that in common with recognition–intentional design that’s almost invisible to teams.

DailyWeeklyMonthly
Public recognition. Praise in public Teams or Slack channels with one rule: it has to be specific.A no-meeting morning or no-meeting day. Not a suggestion, but a rule. This is for deep focus work, preparation, or a Quest.Energy stipend. Modest amount of cash toward running shoes, additional childcare, house cleaning.
The :25 and :55 meeting rule. Everyone gets a few hours back per week without losing productivity. The gains and drains check-in. Can also be during standup. Track responses for a few weeks and catch burnout before it begins.Monthly social hour. On-the-clock time the first Friday of the month. Coworkers do non-work activities such as games, Loom tours, volunteering.
Shutdown signals. Manager makes a point of leaving/logging off with “We’ll resume tomorrow.” Makes employees feel safe to disengage and protect their personal time, too.The sneaky no-challenge fitness challenge. Sedentary positions can do walking 1:1s (on FaceTime if need be) or at-desk stretches. Any arrangement that includes outside time or movement.Workload audits. Reviewing meetings, reports, and approvals to see what can go.

Reinforce and recognize healthy habits with Quests.

Another way wellness is like recognition is that both succeed when they’re habits. If you’ve already got recognition built into the flow of work, a revived company wellness program can work seamlessly alongside it.

Read a book, take a walk, try a healthy new recipe. Teams can be recognized for their wellness efforts, as well as their work. Learn how HeyTaco Quests work and build a catalog of praiseworthy, goal-driven, and balance-supporting missions this week.
