The basics

  • Everyone gets 5 tacos a day to give to teammates.
  • Your tacos reset at midnight in your time zone. Unused tacos don't roll over.
  • There's no limit on how many tacos you can receive.

How do I give a taco?

Tag a person you'd like to give a taco to, write a tasty message, attach a ๐ŸŒฎ emoji, and voilร  โ€” your taco will be sent. (Typing :taco: works too.)

@Priya Shah thanks for the help with financial reports! ๐ŸŒฎ

How do I give tacos to multiple people?

Giving tacos to multiple people in one message is fun and easy. Each person mentioned will get your message's total number of tacos. Here's our recommended format:

Give each person 1 taco

@Marcus Lee @Elena Torres Awesome work on the sales call! ๐ŸŒฎ

Give each person 2 tacos

@Elena Torres @Sam Okafor I appreciate your help in solving the customer issue! ๐ŸŒฎ๐ŸŒฎ

That second message uses 4 tacos: 2 each for Elena and Sam. Keep the math in mind so you don't go over your 5 for the day.

Tag tacos with your values

Add a hashtag like #teamwork or #customerfirst to connect a taco to one of your company values. Your admins set up the tags, and HeyTaco tracks which values show up most. Learn more about values.

@Marcus Lee awesome work coordinating the offsite! ๐ŸŒฎ #teamwork

Giving tacos via a taco reaction

Every time you react to a message with a ๐ŸŒฎ reaction, the person or people tagged in the message receive a taco. In the message below, Marcus received a taco from the reaction.

@Marcus Lee awesome work coordinating the offsite!
Reaction: ๐ŸŒฎ 1

If multiple people are tagged, they each receive a taco from the reaction, provided you have enough tacos left to give. If you don't, HeyTaco gives a taco to each person in the order they're tagged until you run out. In the message below, the reaction gives Elena and Sam 1 taco each.

@Elena Torres @Sam Okafor thanks for solving the customer issue so fast!
Reaction: ๐ŸŒฎ 1

If no one was tagged in the message, the author of the message receives the taco. The only exception is when the author of the message and the giver of the taco reaction are the same person โ€” you can't give tacos to yourself. In the example below, Doug received the taco from the reaction someone else gave him.

Doug Dosberg: Such a nice day today! ๐ŸŒค๏ธ
Reaction: ๐ŸŒฎ 1

Giving Stickers

Stickers are special items you unlock by giving and receiving tacos. Each one has its own value when you give it away: a Super Taco is worth 2 tacos to one person, and a Taco Tree gives a taco each to up to 6 people. Give Stickers from the HeyTaco web app or right in Slack. Admins can also grant Stickers, for a birthday or a team shoutout.

What are redeemable tacos? How are they calculated?

Redeemable tacos are a separate bucket of tacos that can be used to redeem rewards (if your team has them). You receive a redeemable taco every time you receive a taco.

Your HeyTaco profile shows three totals side by side: tacos received, tacos given, and redeemable tacos.

How do I know whether my tacos were tracked by HeyTaco?

You'll receive a notification from HeyTaco every time your tacos have been sent. You'll also receive a notification when your tacos weren't sent, telling you the reason why.

HeyTaco: @Priya Shah received 1 taco from you. You have 4 tacos left to give out today.

You can always confirm whether your tacos have been sent by opening the Activity page in the HeyTaco web application. It lists every taco you've given, who received it, the channel, and the message.

4 reasons HeyTaco won't track your tacos

  1. The message didn't @mention the recipient. Here's a correct example: @Priya thanks for your help ๐ŸŒฎ
  2. The message was edited after being sent to add the ๐ŸŒฎ or an @mention. HeyTaco only recognizes the original message.
  3. The message used more tacos than you had left. Tacos multiply: tag 3 people with ๐ŸŒฎ๐ŸŒฎ and that's 6 tacos, more than your daily 5.
  4. HeyTaco wasn't in the channel the tacos were given in.
